Substance Abuse Counseling

Substance Abuse CounselingAre you looking for a rewarding career? Do you enjoy working with people and helping them improve their lives? Then a career in substance abuse counseling may be a great fit for you. Our two-year program will equip you with the knowledge and skills needed as established by the Iowa Board of Substance Abuse Certification to become a certified alcohol and drug counselor (CADC)*.

You'll gain hands-on experience working in an alcohol and drug treatment unit where you apply the core education and skills you have learned under the direct supervision of a certified counselor. After completing the program and additional hours of experience, you'll be prepared to take the certification exam through the Iowa Board of Certification*. Additionally, you'll meet transfer requirements to move on to a four-year degree program.

With this on-the-job training, mentorship and advanced coursework, you'll establish a strong foundation of skills needed to succeed as a substance abuse counselor. The preparation you do here ensures that you'll know what to expect when entering the workforce and, even better, that you'll be ready for it.

Substance Abuse Counseling Program Outcomes

  1. Examine the role of substance abuse treatment society.
  2. Examine the disciplines of psychology and sociology and their connection to area of addiction.
  3. Apply the skills of assessment, planning, referral and monitoring.
  4. Demonstrate interviewing techniques.
  5. Examine the topic of addiction in society.  
  6. Differentiate between an urgent and non-urgent client situation.
  7. Implement documentation, case notes and goal writing.
  8. Practice ethics and confidentiality evaluations.
  9. Implement the domains of substance abuse treatment as required by the Iowa Board of Certification.
